Painting became an interest to me rather late in life: after retiring from a business career in Houston, and the loss of my husband. Not realizing that Ruidoso was an art community when I moved to the area, I enrolled in a painting class taught by Lorene Caywood….an exceptional artist, great teacher and the sole reason for my progress since beginning her class in 1999. As you can imagine, most of my inspiration comes from the incredible scenery surrounding us in the Land of Enchantment…the natural landscape as well as the soulful architecture of the adobe structures, historic churches, old gates and colorful doors. However, ideas from family members have been a fun source of inspiration (“You should paint an elephant’s head!”…which I did) and I’ve done portraits of family pets as well. The Lincoln County Fair has been a real encouragement in my social participation as an artist. In 2005, one of my entries was chosen as GRAND CHAMPION. In 2006, I was honored by winning one of the JUDGES’ FAVORITE CHOICE(S) AWARD. Locally, my paintings have been featured in Public Places sponsored by the RRAC; Josie's Framery & Gallery on Sudderth Dr., the Gallery at RRAC and in the offices of Dr. Frank DiMotta, M.D. I’ve participated in the art show at the Inn of The Mountain Gods (2005); the 2006 Southeast New Mexico State Fair’s premier Show & Sell in Roswell; and will be showing at the Treasures of Sierra Blanca show in November. |
