| James Horne The human figure is inspiration for most of my work; as it is a fundamental element in the language of the visual arts. I prefer working in three dimensions. I worked for Dillard Department Stores as Design Director in the Store Planning Department designing the interiors. I have a B.A. in Fine Art from The University of the South, Sewanee, Tenn. and a Bachelors of Industrial Design from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, N.Y. Additional studies in art were at the University of Colorado and Aix-en-Provence, France. I studied stone sculpture under Ante Marinovic in San Diego, Ca. Figurative Abstract is what I call my style. Inspired by artists Brancusi, Noguchi and Leger, I try to reduce the subject to its essential forms. I view my life’s experiences as a foundation for sculpture; from being reared on a ranch in Texas where I learned to appreciate the subtleties of nature, to working in designing store interiors, I learned how to visualize three dimensionally. A sculpture starts out as a sketch of the idea and then to a small three dimensional model lin clay. The clay allows me to modify the design to a near final form. working with hammer and chisel and some power tools, I rough out the shape. I use pneumatic chisels and then rasps, rifflers and finally sand paper to achieve a finish surface. I try for a near perfect finish, one that an observer wants to touch.
