MISHA AND ANTHONY MALPICA

Ruidoso Regional Council For The Arts

Misha Malpica

Misha’s incredible sculptures have been fascinating and delighting collectors from around the world for over thirty years. Misha transforms clay into figures of ancient and wise spirits from a long time forgotten. Her captivating work embodies the dignity and proud tribal traditions of the Native Americans. Haunting visions of warriors and healers, hunters and gatherers, Misha sculpts not only the person, she sculpts the spirit. Her award winning sculptures have been featured on the cover of magazines and included in Southwest Art, Phoenix Home and Garden and New Mexico Magazine. In 1998 Misha received The Hubbard Museum of the American West’s “Best Lincoln County Artist” award for her Ghost Warrior.

Misha’s work has decorated the White House Christmas tree and is included in the permanent collection of American Artists, Washington DC. Recently she was chosen to be included in Kennedy Publishing’s national Art publication as “Best in Mixed Media Artist,” to be released later this year. Included in the collections of actress Demi Moore, the late Lucille Ball and numerous other collectors, Misha continues to create unique sculptures and teach summer workshops from her studio and home here in Ruidoso, New Mexico.

“In my mind’s eye I can see a face. As the day comes to life in my hands, I can see the person and their story. My work is about a fleeting glimpse into someone’s life, a memory of a journey.”

Anthony Malpica

Anthony’s love for wood began while working with Master Craftsmen at an antique furniture reproduction company in New York City. He watched in awe as they recreated Italian Provincial furniture using secrets of Old World artisans. These artisans, who barely spoke English, gave Anthony his early appreciation of the beauty of wood that would resurface later in his life.

Anthony began to sculpt contemporary pieces while making burl wood bases for his artist wife, Misha’s sculptures. This rekindled his love for the inner beauty of the tree, the heart wood, the beautiful grains. In 2001 he created an elegant contemporary sculpture from Bird’s Eye Maple wood. Anthony’s first sculpture was titled

“Guardian.” A large turquoise nugget was suspended within the wood, symbolizing strength and protections of the home. It is his signature piece.

Creating mixed media sculptures for table top to stunning six foot sculptures, Anthony’s work continues to blossom. The Brick City Center for the Arts awarded him “Best in Show” for his contemporary bear “Nompata,” made of Bird’s eye maple and inlaid with a turquoise chip lighting bolt. His stylized furniture and custom tables are exhibited at galleries in Ruidoso, Santa Fe, and Scottsdale Arizona. A husband and wife artist team, constantly producing new art, Anthony and Misha have lived in Ruidoso for over ten years.
