JENNA SIMS

Ruidoso Regional Council For The Arts

Jenna Sims
I have been interested in art since childhood. One Christmas I received a Grumbacher starter oil paint kit and from then on the “monkey was out of the cage”.

Over the years my work has evolved from realistic, traditional, still life and landscape miniatures, to highly stylized nudes to large canvas abstract expressionism. I achieved my style of work with layering, textural quality, shape and form through experimentation and by studying my favorite artists such as Modigliani, Kandinsky, Pollock, De Kooning, Picasso and Rothko. I looked at other artists’ work, saw what I liked about it and then applied those concepts to my own work.

Ideas for my pieces come from a lot of different places. I get some of my ideas from magazines, ad designs, or particular colors that may inspire me. I will have some kind of visual image in mind; it might be as simple as a series of shapes or lines.

I started abstract work to express my inner self and find the ability to express who I am very liberating. I feel I have not achieved my goal if a person stands in front of one of my paintings and exclaims “What is it”? My goal is for them to capture the essence and feeling of the painting rather than an actual scene or object. My art is created to be thought evoking, emotional, and inspirational.

I was born and raised in El Paso, Texas and now reside in Ruidoso, New Mexico since 1983.
