KAREN SMITH

Ruidoso Regional Council For The Arts

Karen Smith

I was born and raised in Galveston, Texas, the last of five generations of strong, proud women who were also born there. I am very happy to say my parents are still in the area holding down the fort, or rather, the beach.

I enrolled as a freshman in college at age 29, and received my Bachelors Degree in Psychology in 1987, and a Masters of Science in Social Work in 1989. After a brief career in medical social work, and a three year stint with a debilitating illness, I reclaimed my grandmother’s craft of sewing. My husband Marvin and I lived in Dallas for 26 years and raised our three children there. We moved to Lincoln County in June of 2003, where we are blessed to be living our dream of making art under New Mexico skies. Over the last twelve years, with the mentoring of a very special friend, I have discovered that fabric is my voice. I continue to learn about my art and my self as never before.

I make art in order to understand and express how I fit into this world. Like my poetry, I hope my images reflect the musings and experiences that all people seem to share. I am inspired by obvious things such as the color and pattern in a fine fabric, and also by the more abstract ideas of spiritual living in this complicated world. I think we make our way through emotional and physical experiences of life as best we can, sometimes with clarity and sometimes blindly, always hoping for a clearer and clearer view of where we’re going and what we’re doing. I believe Grace always hovers just over my shoulder, guiding me along my path, and if I am quiet and still enough to listen, She reminds me of the Divine that lights my path to understanding and trust.
