The Creative Gourd

The Ruidoso Regional Council for the Arts will be presenting their first-ever gourd art show in July and August of this year. The New Mexico Gourd Society (NMGS) will be one of the sponsors for this event.

This show will be held in Ruidoso from July 16, 2010 to August 15, 2010. Anyone who is a resident of New Mexico may enter their artwork. It is not a juried show. There is a $10.00 fee per entry and an individual may enter up to three pieces. The gourds will be judged in two major categories only, gourd art and gourd art subject matter. The gourd art category is for the art on a gourd and the gourd subject matter is for art of any other medium, (i.e., fabric, paintings, etc.), but it must have a gourd featured as the subject. Prize money will be awarded in each category. All gourd art will be for sale with the RRCA receiving a 25% commission. There will be a reception on Friday, July 16, 2010 from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

“It happened one afternoon while I was working out in my basement. I was listening to the song “Answered” from the group Thrice’s album Beggars, a song I had probably heard a half-dozen times before, when I suddenly realized that songwriter Dustin Kensrue was alluding to both the Biblical book of Job and C.S. Lewis’s story Till We Have Faces. An already powerful song opened up to me in new ways, both intellectually and emotionally. It was a revelation I hadn’t discovered on my third or even fifth hearing of the song. My experience of the song’s artistry was actually enhanced with repeated indulgence.

…

Good art bears up and even flourishes under repeated indulgence. I am afraid that today the practice of indulging in and creating good art – art that can be returned to repeatedly – is being buried under the wave of commercialized pop culture. Teenage girls may put Justin Bieber on repeat on their iPods, but will anyone remember his songs in fifteen or twenty years as anything more than a humorously nostalgic memory? Are they rich enough to reveal new facets over time?”

“Suppose your introduction to show business, at the tender age of 10 ½,was a starring role in a low-budget horror movie that, for a time, was deemed by the users of the Internet Movie Database to be the worst movie ever. Some people might handle that embarrassment by omitting the credit from their résumé and hoping it never was discovered; others might be shamed out of the industry altogether. But one man made a film about this experience to share it with as many people as possible…”

We are thankful.

Take a few minutes to browse Atticus’ website – it’s beautiful. Better yet, stop by there! The weather’s getting colder…have some hot tea and browse the book selection, get a taste of the local flavor!

On a similar note…
I just read this article from The Huffington Post: Not a Simple Price War – It’s a Fight Over What You Get to Read. I would highly recommend taking the time to look it over…
It’s the local places like Atticus Books & Teahouse and Books, Etc. who keep literary discovery alive and kicking.

The Hubbard Museum of the American West and the City of Ruidoso Downs, New Mexico present Biennale Grande.

The Biennale Grande is a juried fine arts competition that seeks to recognize and honor excellence in the contemporary visual arts of the American West. Artists who are selected as finalists benefit from regional exposure through a Smithsonian Affiliated Museum, have the opportunity to receive recognition for their work as well as the opportunity to sell that work during the exhibition. Jurors will be art professionals chosen to ensure a diverse range of perspectives and styles. All decisions by the jurors will be final.

There are cash awards totaling $2800 distributed between Best of Show, Second Place, Third Place, and three Honorable Mention awards.

The competition is open to all artists of any age, both amatuer and professional, currently residing in New Mexico. Eligible media include drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, fiber art, and mixed media. They will not be able, this year, to accept videos, films, photographs or large installations. All works must have been completed within the past five years.
