The Creative Gourd

The Ruidoso Regional Council for the Arts will be presenting their 2nd Annual gourd art show in August of this year. The New Mexico Gourd Society (NMGS) will be one of the sponsors for this event.  It is a juried exhibit that attracts outstanding gourd artists from all over New Mexico, Arizona and Texas. Watch this website posting for the latest news as the event fast approaches!

Anyone who is a resident of New Mexico, Arizona, or Texas may enter their artwork. An individual may enter up to three pieces, entry fees are as follows: $10 per item or 3 entries for $25.

The gourds may be entered in two major categories: gourd art and gourd art subject matter. The gourd art category is for the art on a gourd; and, the gourd subject matter is for art of any other medium (i.e. fabric, paintings, etc.) but must have a gourd featured as the subject.

All gourd art will be for sale with the R.R.C.A. receiving a 25% commission. There will be an Opening Reception on Saturday, August 6th, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM.

This bring Thanksgiving week, the office/gallery is closed on Thursday and Friday. We’re open Monday thru Wednesday…and the gallery is a beautiful mess! Things are cleaned out and we’re in the midst of painting and other renovations.

With other things going on for the staff, we’re going to take a breather on the blog until after Thanksgiving. Just giving everyone a heads up. We’ve not forgotten you…just a bit of a break. We’ll see you on Monday, November 30.

It’s the local places like Atticus Books & Teahouse and Books, Etc. who keep literary discovery alive and kicking.

The Biennale Grande is a juried fine arts competition that seeks to recognize and honor excellence in the contemporary visual arts of the American West. Artists who are selected as finalists benefit from regional exposure through a Smithsonian Affiliated Museum, have the opportunity to receive recognition for their work as well as the opportunity to sell that work during the exhibition. Jurors will be art professionals chosen to ensure a diverse range of perspectives and styles. All decisions by the jurors will be final.

There are cash awards totaling $2800 distributed between Best of Show, Second Place, Third Place, and three Honorable Mention awards.

The competition is open to all artists of any age, both amatuer and professional, currently residing in New Mexico. Eligible media include drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, fiber art, and mixed media. They will not be able, this year, to accept videos, films, photographs or large installations. All works must have been completed within the past five years.

The first of these gatherings will take place in the RRCA workshop room on Saturday, October 17, from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. Another meeting is planned for October 31, same place and time.

We would like to know ahead of time who is planning to come – so if you’re interested pleace contact the RRCA office as soon as possible!

The RRCA is receiving donations for auction at the event…consider this a strong and clear request Donations may be dropped off at Josie’s Framery during business hours.
